Visitor Center and Museum
Your first stop for getting grounded in the park’s here and now—and the “then and once was”—the Visitor Center offers information about everything pertaining to Breaks Interstate Park. You’ll find park maps and books, trail guides, photographs, wildlife specimens, as well as explanations of the park’s unusual geological features and the science behind the local coal industry. Fishing licenses and gate passes are also available here. There are always knowledgeable, friendly faces inside the Visitor Center to offer assistance in any way. The Visitor Center is open Friday - Sunday from April 3 - May 22; Daily from May 23 - Labor Day; Thursday - Sunday after Labor Day to November 2. Hours of operation may vary depending on the season. A 24-hour touch screen kiosk is located outside the Visitor Center which offers park information and trail maps. Interpretive programming is planned each week throughout prime season; the weekly schedule is available at the Visitor Center. For more information about park activities, call the Visitor Center at 276-865-4413 ext. 3221.
Throughout much of the year, you’ll find demonstrations of a working gristmill adjacent to the park Visitor Center. The gristmill—an original gas-powered model dating back to the 1930s—grinds corn into corn meal. This was, historically, a staple food product for the region’s residents. Visitors get to try their hand at a manual gristmill, and experience the difficulty faced in obtaining the simplest of things, such as bread. Many farming tools dating to the 1920s are also on display.
Below you will find several informational pieces that might help you plan your next visit.
