Breaks Interstate Park

Birds

Perigon Falcon at The Breaks Interstate ParkThere are a wide variety of birds located in the park. Such as the Swainson’s Warbler, were it will nest every year at the park. We also have the Black Hooded Warbler, Black and White Warbler, and Yellow Rumped Warbler. In the gorge you will see the Turkey Buzzard and the Red Tail Hawk gliding by you while standing on our Overlooks and on occasion deep in the gorge you will see an Osprey diving into the Russell Fork River for fish.

A bird checklist can be obtained at the Visitor center for your convenience, where it will show what birds have been identified over the years in the park. In the winter the park participates in the Christmas Bird Count for the National Audubon Society and everyone is invited to help.

During the summer of 2007, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries brought young perigon falcon chicks to the park. Park Naturalist, Terry Owens, and his coworkers became their parents and provided their food until they were old enough to turn loose. The project goal was to reinstate these birds to Southwest Virginia and Eastern Kentucky.
