Breaks Park Plans free ‘Last Blast’ to commemorate pool’s closing
Breaks Interstate Park is planning a ‘Last Blast’ free pool day celebration on Labor Day, Monday, September 5. With hopes of beginning construction on a waterpark facility this fall, officials anticipate Labor Day to be the final day of operation for the current pool.
“So many people have such wonderful memories at the Breaks Pool,” said Superintendent Matthew O’Quinn, “And while everyone is excited about the possibility of getting a waterpark facility at Breaks, there is also some sentimentality involved in losing a place that has meant so much to so many in this area,” he added.
The pool was built in 1969, and opened in 1970. “Each summer it’s been open, children have learned to swim, gotten up enough nerve to jump off the diving board, spent time with their families,” said O’Quinn, “many have had their first job here. It’s a special place to a lot of people, and we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to join us and revisit those memories on what is likely to be the last day that pool is ever open,” he said.
Admission will be free of charge for all on Labor Day. The pool will be open from 11 am to 7 pm.
Breaks Interstate Park is located on the Kentucky - Virginia border and is accessed by State Route 80. Commissioned by the U.S. Congress in 1954, it encompasses more than 4,600 acres is one of only two interstate parks in the United States.
