Festive Autumn events planned at Breaks Park

Breaks Interstate Park has several festive events and activities planned for this fall.

Activities will include Halloween Weekends in the campground, which will feature campsite decorating contests and camper trick or treating each weekend in October; a costume contest; a haunted house; and Pike County Extension’s Homemaking in the Mountains.

Halloween Weekends

Halloween Weekends will begin Saturday, October 1, and will continue each weekend throughout October.

A campsite decorating contest will be held each Saturday, with judging taking place at 5 pm. Prizes will be awarded to winners each week. Each weekly winner will then be entered into a drawing to be held at the end of the month for a free one night cabin stay.

Campground trick or treating will also be held for children 12 and under each Saturday night in October from 6 pm to 7:30. Campers who wish to participate as “treaters” can get a tag from the campground store to be displayed at their campsite so children will know which sites are participating. Children who trick or treat must be accompanied by an adult. Full information may be found at the campground store.

Costume Contest & Movie Night

A costume contest will be held at the park amphitheater on October 15. It will begin at 7 pm, and is open for kids ages birth to 13. A Halloween themed movie will be shown immediately after the costume contest.

Haunted House

The second annual Haunted House, co-sponsored by Breaks Park and Boy Scout Troop 750, will run Friday and Saturday nights on October 21 and 22; and Friday and Saturday nights on October 28 and 29. The haunted house will again be located in the former park administrative building adjacent to the motel.

Admission will be $3 for ages 12 and up; and $2 for ages 11 and under. Lighted tours will be available for those who wish to have a less-scary experience.

Pike County Extension’s Homemaking in the Mountains

This annual regional crafting event is planned for October 22. Beginning at 10 am in the Rhododendron Conference Center, visitors will see demonstrations and exhibitions of craftsmanship from area artisans. Though displays change from year to year, past exhibits have ranged from quiltmaking to candy making to homemade Christmas ornaments. Come and see the beautiful handiwork. The event will run until 3 p.m.

Appalachian Heritage Festival

The first annual Appalachian Heritage Festival will focus on traditional and cultural art forms, such as woodworking, quilting, jewelry making, handmade crafts, basketry, food preservation and more. Regional authors will also be on hand, and on-site demonstrations will be going on throughout the day, including storytelling, apple butter making, quilting, and Native American craft and jewelry making. Programs are also scheduled focusing on the roles such things as corn meal and moonshine played in the lives of mountain settlers.

Vendors and many exhibits will be held inside the Rhododendron Lodge and Conference Center, while the outdoor heritage demonstrations will take place at the Visitor Center. The festival will run from 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday, and 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday. There is no admission charge for the festival.
